EVB90109 General Description
The EVB90109 is an assembled module that allows evaluating the advantages of the MLX90109 transceiver IC. It will facilitate the starts of RFID applications and can be implemented in a compact way, with minimum development time, and minimum final system cost. All pins of the MLX90109 reader are available on a DIL socket for easy control with an external microcontroller. Two extra pins have been added for extended control options on the voltage on the MODU pin.
The EVB90109 can be used as a 125 kHz reader, to read out the load modulation from a transponder. It can also be used to send information to a transponder using On/Off keying modulation. For fast protocol which required fast fall time on the reader’s antenna, the EVB90109 includes a “Fast decay” circuit composed of an external transistor and diode in parallel on the antenna. This circuit is accessible through a digital pin on the DIL-10 connector.
EVB90109 Features and Benefits
- Minimum PCB size (30 * 30 mm) including a MLX90109 transceiver IC and an optimized antenna
- Tuned resonance frequency to 125kHz
- Modulation network on board for a maximum flexibility
- Setup for fast On/Off keying modulation mode
- DIL-10 footprint for easy mounting on prototype set up and development kit

EVB90109 Frequently asked Questions
MLX90109 Question
Answer
I baught the EVB90109 and DVK90109.But the distance of communication is very short when I test by using your tag and tool and I must alter the position between the tag and the EVB90109 and put the tag on the EVB9019.
EVB90109 & EVB90121 boards
Question
I have just received the EVB90109 & EVB90121 boards. I have installed the UT121 software and it updated itself to this:
Lib Mosaique; Release 1.5 (version: 1.5)
Lib Ut121Ban; Release 2.14 (version: 2.14_0)
Lib Ut121Main; Release 2.22 (version: 2.22)
Lib Ut121Update; Release 2.1 (version: 2.1)
Fw Ut121Firmware; Release 1.9 (version: 1.9, Build SoftDist/Atmel 2005.10.10/2005.10.10)
I am sending the Root->ISO15693->ISO15693 Dual Sub-carrier->Inventory xxxxxxx0 command and I always get this result:
Iso15 07010100 crc slot 16 wait 2 ->
<- OK - Command has been sent

MLX90109 & MLX90121 Choose
Question
I have two questions:
1.Witch one of MLX90109 & MLX90121 I have chouse for about 15 – 20 cm reading distance and minimum current needed by reader working with 3.3 v battery?
I prefer to use external coil antenna 70 - 80mm diameter on both reader and transponder side.
2.
Why in web store in don’t see EVB90109 & EVB90121 , MLX90109, MLX90121?
Answer
As explained, we prefer when customers start working with the DVKs, even if it is possible to buy from us the EVBs and even samples.
From our experience, DVKs greatly speed up the development cylce at the customer place.
DVKs are not generic: If you buy a DVK90121 and an EVB90109, you will need anyway to change the software of the DVK to turn it into a DVK90109.
General quesions for EVB90109
Answer
To use the EVB90109 for +3.3V operation R2 should be increased from 8.2k to 15k so that VMODU remains higher than 0.8V per Note in paragraph 7.5 of the MLX90109 data sheet. The antenna voltage swing (also per paragraph 7.5) and field strength will be reduced with +3.3V operation, so EVB90109 operating range will be reduced from 2 to 15cm at +5V operation to 1 to 10cm at +3.3V operation. Other 125kHz transceiver ICs require +5V supply for operation and the MLX90109 parallel L-C antenna requires significantly less current than a series L-C antenna, it is an ideal solution for low current or battery powered applications.
BoM for EVB90109
Question
I want to use the design used on the EVB90109 to integrate it into our application. Could you provide me with a BoM/List of approved/tested parts for this board?
Perhaps a Gerber file? :)
I know, I am getting lazy, but we are under pressure with some other projects and I want to speed this up.
Answer
You may find more information in the documentation EVB90109 available on our WEB-site. Otherwise, please note the EVB90109 is delivered with a DIL-10 connector which easily allow you to connect it to your application. To acquire an EVB90109, please contact the corresponding sales department of Melexis.

General quesions for MLX90109
Answer
The MLX90109 is a 125kHz transceiver very simple to use. You will find lots of information in the datasheet of this product available on our WEB-site.
It requires a DC voltage on the MODU pin to set the field ON (Two resistors). After that, the demodulated information, according to the pins SPEED and MODE, is available on the pin DATA and CLOCK. These two pins must be pulled-up by externally.
To modulate information (100%), you only have to change the voltage on MODU according to the schematic on page 11 of the datasheet. For fast data rates, an external diode and transistor may be added in parallel to the antenna to reduce the fall time.
What I suggest you get the EVB90109 which is a very compact module including a parallel antenna. It will help you to start working with the MLX90109.
