Optical Sensors

Subscribe to Category (includes all related products and assets)

Melexis’ optical sensors use standard CMOS processes and are sensitive to visible light and near infrared. They include, single photodiode sensors such as Optical Switches, Light-to-Voltage and Light-to-Frequency sensors; Linear arrays; CMOS cameras and more. All our optical sensors are automotive qualified and are therefore highly rugged, as well as resistant to dirt and dust.

Our linear arrays are used in image scanning, mark and code reading, optical character recognition (OCR), contact imaging, edge detection and positioning, and optical linear and rotary encoding. A key application is the measurement of steering position using our Steering Wheel Angle and Steering Wheel Torque sensors, where optical arrays are replacing potentiometers because of the latter’s susceptibility to high temperature and vibration.

Melexis’ CMOS cameras are manufactured using an advanced 0.18µm CMOS imaging process. The benefits of Melexis design and process are low light, night vision capability, low noise and extended temperature operation.

Our image sensors are available as standalone optical arrays or as entire system in packages (SIPs). Our SensorEyeC series is an example of our SIPs, integrating the optical sensor IC, photodiode, transimpedance amplifier and output transistor on one chip. Another example is the Avocet CMOS image sensor, which combines an image array, the digital image processing pipeline and camera control functions in a single SIP

Our CMOS cameras primarily target automotive applications for forward looking, night vision and safety critical applications. Typical uses in vehicles include Automotive Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Automatic Headlight Control, Object and Pedestrian Detection, Night Vision, as well as interior applications such as Driver Recognition, Drowsiness and Smart Airbag Deployment. Melexis CMOS imaging sensors are also suitable for machine vision, robotics and automation, surveillance and security, and NIR imaging.
