Your Next-Gen Seatbelt Buckle Switch is Here to Stay
Tessenderlo-Ham, Belgium, 22 October 2026 – Expanding on the industry’s widest sensing portfolio, Melexis introduces the MLX92342, a 2-wire PCB-less switch providing robustness and safety, contributing to modern zonal architectures. This programmable Hall effect sensor simplifies remote position detection across automotive and industrial systems. It delivers a valid output plus safety signal in less than 100 µs, an unmatched and critical advantage for life-protecting applications like seatbelt buckles.

As vehicle architectures move toward zonal control, more sensing functions are being pushed to remote endpoints, while processing and intelligence are consolidated in central or zonal electronic control units (ECUs). This shift places new demands on simple position and latch sensors. Engineers need compact, reliable devices that can sit close to the mechanical function, operate without a local PCB, reduce wiring, and still deliver the diagnostic and safety performance required by modern vehicle platforms.
The MLX92342 aims to address this need with a 2-wire current interface that supports PCB-less implementation while maintaining compatibility with established remote sensing architectures. By changing its supply current according to the magnetic state, the device enables simple connection to an ECU through a two-wire interface, helping reduce harness complexity compared with conventional three-wire solutions. It is a suitable option for applications currently served by mechanical microswitches, reed switches, or less advanced magnetic switches, while adding programmability, diagnostics, and contactless robustness.
Built for Safety-Critical Remote Sensing
The MLX92342 is developed according to ISO 26262 as a safety hardware element out of context, supporting ASIL B system design. It integrates on-chip diagnostics with a dedicated safe state, reported through a defined current level, helping the host ECU distinguish faults from normal on/off sensor states.
Critically, the MLX92342 delivers a valid safety signal in less than 100 µs, supporting fast ECU readout in demanding safety-related applications. This is particularly valuable in systems such as seatbelt buckle detection, where ECUs may read sensor status within very short test windows. Faster valid output helps reduce timing constraints during system checks and production testing, while supporting earlier safety response in applications where every measurement cycle matters.
The device also offers two diagnostic operating modes to enable different application requirements. Sequential diagnostic mode supports switch and end-position applications such as seatbelt buckles, brake fluid level sensing, locks, flaps, and other simple state detection functions. Parallel diagnostic mode enables faster magnetic updates for latch-based applications, including motor commutation in window lifters, valves, gear mechanisms, and other actuated systems.
Configurable for Switch, Latch, and Endpoint Applications
The MLX92342 can be used in magnetic latch, unipolar switch, or omnipolar switch applications, giving engineers flexibility to address different mechanical designs and magnetic configurations with one device platform. It supports a wide magnetic range from 0.5 mT to 200 mT, enabling use with different magnet strengths, air gaps, and mechanical tolerances.
Optional Integrated Magnetic Concentrator (IMC) technology enables lateral magnetic sensing, expanding placement flexibility where mechanical packaging prevents straightforward perpendicular field detection. This helps engineers adapt the sensor to constrained endpoint locations without redesigning the wider system architecture. Key configurable parameters include switching thresholds, magnetic behavior, output polarity, diagnostic mode, retry period, temperature coefficient, and customer ID, further allowing the device to be adapted to a broad range of system requirements.
The MLX92342 operates from 2.7 V to 28 V and is specified for -40 °C to +150 °C ambient operation, with configurable temperature compensation from -2000 ppm/°C to 0 ppm/°C. It includes reverse supply voltage protection, thermal protection, under-voltage reset, and strong electrostatic discharge (ESD) robustness, including 15 kV system-level contact discharge and 25 kV indirect discharge capability. Package options include TSOT23-3L surface-mount, TO92-3L through-hole, and PCB-less TO92-3L variants with an integrated capacitor.
“With the MLX92342, we support the need for more robust, safety-ready 2-wire sensing at the edge of new vehicle architectures,” said Minko Daskalov, Product Line Director at Melexis. “It brings together PCB-less implementation, higher accuracy, strong ESD performance, and a valid safety signal in less than 100 µs, giving engineers a high-performance remote sensor for seatbelt buckles, actuators, and other zonal endpoint applications.”
