Research & Development Engineering

(Senior) Applications Engineer specializing in Inductive Position Sensors (IPS)

Locations: Belgium (Tessenderlo) or Bulgaria (Sofia) or Switzerland (Bevaix)

Role Overview
The AE acts as the primary technical bridge between Melexis and the customer. He will be responsible for ensuring the successful "design-in" of inductive position sensor ICs into customer applications. This involves designing sensor coils, building evaluation boards and development kits (EVBs/DVKs), writing technical documentation and troubleshooting complex electro-mechanical issues on the customer's behalf.

Key Responsibilities

  •  Customer Support & Design-In: Guide customers globally in selecting the best-fitting IPS product for their specific mechanical constraints and application.
    - Review customer schematics and PCB layouts, specifically focusing on the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) coil designs to ensure optimal signal coupling and immunity to parasitic stray magnetic fields.
    - Troubleshoot and debug customer hardware and system-level issues, often requiring the recreation of problems in the lab.
  • Prototyping & Coil Design:
    - Design, simulate, and optimize custom inductive sensor coil geometries (linear, rotary, off-axis) using the Melexis simulator, Comsol and EDA tools like Altium..
    - Develop hardware reference designs, evaluation boards and product demonstrators to showcase sensor capabilities.
  • Validation & Lab Work:
    - Perform bench characterization and validation of new silicon from an application perspective to ensure real-world robustness.
    - Automate lab testing environments and take complex measurements using oscilloscopes, function generators, and high-precision motor test benches.
  • Technical Collateral Generation:
    - Write and maintain high-quality technical documentation, including datasheets, application notes, user guides, and white papers.
    - Develop software tools, scripts, or GUIs (usually in Python, C/C++, or LabVIEW) to help customers interface with the sensor ICs.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    - Work closely with Systems Engineers and marketing during the IC definition phase to ensure new products meet market demands.
    - Train field application engineers (FAEs) and the sales/distributors on new products and technical selling points.
