Internship: Biofunctionalization and Characterization of a GFET-on-CMOS Biosensing Platform - Bevaix, Switzerland
Location: Bevaix (NE) & EPFL – 6 months
Your future job
Project Description
Melexis has developed a unique GFET-on-CMOS biosensing platform combining a 256-pixel graphene sensor array monolithically integrated on a CMOS ASIC, supported by dedicated development kits for rapid biosensor evaluation. The next step is to transform this technology into application-specific biosensors. During this internship, you will functionalize the platform for a selected biomarker (e.g., ions, hormones, or nucleic acids), optimize the bio-interface chemistry, and characterize sensor performance. You will work closely with biosensing and sensor design engineers to advance the platform towards future wearable and point-of-care diagnostic systems.
More specifically, you will:
Review the state of the art in graphene/GFET surface functionalization (e.g., ion-selective membranes, aptamer/ssDNA and antibody bio-conjugation).
Select and implement functionalization protocols for a target analyte (e.g., ions, hormones, or nucleic acids).
Design and perform calibration, selectivity, interference, and reversibility experiments.
Evaluate signal stability, reproducibility, and long-term robustness of the functionalized interface.
Explore data processing and ML-assisted analysis of the resulting sensor response data.
Expected Results
A validated functionalization protocol for the selected analyte(s) on the GFET-on-CMOS platform.
A characterized dataset of transducer performance (sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility, stability).
Recommendations for future integration of the platform into microfluidic and multiplexed biosensing systems.
Your profile
Backgrounds in life Science, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineer, Physics, or related fields.
Solid understanding of surface chemistry, bio-conjugation, or electrochemical/electronic sensing principles.
Hands-on lab experience (wet chemistry, microfabrication, or sensor characterization) is a strong plus.
Familiarity with FETs, biosensors, or graphene-based transducers is a strong plus.
Basic data analysis skills (Python, MATLAB, or similar) appreciated; ML/statistics background is a plus.
